Chang and her colleagues created a device, called a compensator, that provided a cost effective, manual approach to improve treatment and reduce toxicities. “We believe we can use our discoveries to help improve cancer care in clinics that have basic technology.”ĮmpowerRT is using technology that Chang helped develop as a temporary solution more than 20 years ago at UNC Hospitals to improve radiation therapy while they waited for more advanced technologies to become commercially available. “In the last 20 years, we have gone through a technological revolution,” Chang said. IMRT is effective in treating cancer with fewer side effects, but can cost millions of dollars. Researchers say this technology could be useful to clinics that rely on basic or older equipment, and lack the funds, training and supporting infrastructure to implement modern IMRT, or intensity-modulated radiation therapy.
